What's On: Eco Events for October
Welcome to the 97th edition of The Northern Eco. Here’s a round-up of events coming up across North Yorkshire and the North East this month for those with a greener heart.

York Environment Weeks are back from Saturday 14th September – Saturday 12th October 2024 for a diverse programme of events celebrating and standing up for the environment. Organisers say there’s more than 90 events happening across the city: “We’re thrilled to see such a diverse range of events in this year’s festival, including both familiar faces and brand new event organisers. We believe there’s something in the programme for everyone, whether you want to explore York’s green spaces, get stuck in with hands-on conservation tasks, or learn about how we can make our homes and the city more sustainable.” More details below.
A short report on the results of the water testing by Stop Ure Pollution volunteers will be presented by YDRT at the public meeting being held by SUP at Leyburn Methodist Church Hall at 6.30pm on Tuesday October 1. A full report will be prepared by YDRT after the second day of testing.
Tuesday 1 October, 7- 8.30pm: Beyond Drax: A Real Green Future for Yorkshire and the Humber Join the Stop Burning Trees Coalition to learn how we can secure a better future for workers and local communities by transitioning away from energy generated by burning trees at Drax. Spark York, Piccadilly
Tuesday 1 October and Tuesday 8 October, 2- 4.30pm: Cycling Without Age Nature Rides . Volunteer pedallers from York Bike Belles are taking passengers out in their comfortable Triobike to enjoy the green spaces around the south of the city. Meet at Cycle Heaven, Fulford, York.
Tuesday 1st October, 6.30-8.30pm: Re-imaging the future - a writing workshop for dreamers and writers A free event run by Mikyla Limpkin, a local author and community educator, this workshop aims to generate and record visions and ideas for a better world. Open to non-writers and writers of all ages and abilities. Friargate Quaker Meeting House, Friargate, York, YO1 9RL.
Wednesday, 2 October from 6pm People, Planet, Pint, Northallerton at The Potting Shed.
Thursday to Saturday October 3-5, there will be exhibitions about the water sampling and results from Stop Ure Pollution at Leyburn and Bainbridge Quaker Meeting Houses. That at Bainbridge will be open from 10am to 4pm each day, and that at Leyburn from 2pm to 4pm on Thursday, and from 10am to 4pm on Friday and Saturday. Refreshments will be served. These exhibitions are in conjunction with the commemoration of the anniversary of the birth of George Fox, the founder of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
Friday 4th October, 7-9pm: Friends of the Earth host an environmental panel and Q&A with four local Councillors: Jenny Kent, Michael Pavlovic, Kate Ravilious and Stephen Fenton. Register to submit your questions in advance. Main Hall, York CVS, Priory Street, York.
Saturday 5th October, 10am-4pm, UK Fungi Day The Yorkshire Arboretum is joining in with British Mycological Society celebrations for UK Fungi Day with a range of interactive learning and activities in the Tree Health Centre.
Gilling West, 5th October 1-4pm: Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust is hosting the annual open day in Gilling West. There'll be talks, demos, a guided river walk and the Rivers2U mobile lab and classroom will be there. Save Our Swale will be supporting this event and hosting a stall.
Sunday 6th October, 1-3pm: #talkingclimate: A toolkit for more effective conversations. Do you find it hard to talk to people in your life about climate change? Join YorkCliConnect for a two-hour workshop to build up a practical toolkit, based on Climate Outreach research, to practise talking about climate change with your friends, family and colleagues. Tuesday 8 October - Saturday 19 October, North Yorkshire based cartoonist Mike Barfield is always on the button with Apparently, his commentary on modern life in Private Eye. If you’d like to see more (or maybe purchase the original, signed print above for your loo!) he has an exhibition opening next month with 200 original artworks. Details here.
Wednesday 9 October, 9.30am-3pm. Fancy making your own Christmas cheese? Spend a day discovering cheesemaking in an actual working dairy which turns 1500 litres of raw cows milk into Yoredale Wensleydale.Tickets here.

Tuesday, 22 October North Green Skills conference 2024. A conference looking at the green skills challenges and opportunities in the North of England from 9:30 - 4pm at St. James' Park, Newcastle.
Beaver Ecology and Conservation workshop on Wednesday, 23 October at Wallington Hall, Cambo, Morpeth.
