Welcome to the 124th edition of The Northern Eco. Here’s a round-up of events coming up across North Yorkshire and the North East this month for those with a greener heart. It exists thanks to our brilliant paying subscribers. 🙏

  • World Wetlands Day is being held on 2nd March and seeks to raise awareness and understanding of what wetlands are and how they can contribute towards restoring them.

  • Monday, March 3 there’s a hybrid online/offline Gender and Climate Justice in the Global South talk from 3 · 6 - 8pm at Temple Hall, York and Online via Zoom livestream.

  • Wednesday 5th March Make it Wild’s Branching Out – Tree Planting Networking Event at Bank Woods, Summerbridge.

  • Wednesday March 5 it’s the monthly Northallerton People, Planet, Pint

  • North Yorkshire Rotters will be at Saturday 8 March 2025 - 10.00-13.00 - Sights and Sounds of Ripon at Ripon Library (3 Moss Arcade, Ripon, HG4 1AG)

  • Sustainable Swaledale’s 6 March 7pm meeting at the Arkengarthdale Hub about Ousewem’s local flood resilience in the area includes NFM programme manager, Amanda Crossfield and senior NFM project officer, Guy Mason talking about flood risk and how nature-based solutions protect communities.

  • Ousewem Pie and Peas night for farmers & landowners meeting for farmers and landowners who have land along Arkle Beck on 10 March, 7pm at The Buck, Reeth.

  • 14th March is the International Day of Action for Rivers and all about protecting rivers and defending the rights of communities that depend on them.

  • 15th March - Stokesley and Villages Repair Cafe in Swainby

  • Global Recycling Day is on 18th March and urges leaders around the world to adopt a joined up approach to recycling. It also urges people to see unwanted items as a resource, rather than waste, and to appreciate recycled and repurposed items.

  • Wednesday, March 19 sees an online talk An Introduction to soil health; why it matters for farming & the environment from 12pm - 12.45pm diving into the world of soil health and its crucial role in farming and the environment.

  • 20th March is World Sparrow Day which highlights the reasons for this decline, including destruction of its habitat, lack of insect food for the young and even the increasing microwave pollution from mobile phone towers.

  • 20th March - Ilkley People, Planet, Pint

  • 20th March - Malton People, Planet, Pint

  • Join our Carbon Literacy training course with accreditation from the Carbon Literacy project from 2pm on Friday, March 21.

  • 22nd March is World Water Day, accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. As well as raising awareness of the importance of saving water it encourages changing the way you use, consume and manage water in your lives.

  • 22nd March - Thirsk Repair Cafe

  • Richmondshire Climate Action Partnership will hold the next Repair Cafe in Richmond Town Hall on Sunday 23rd March , 9.45am to 12.30pm.

  • 26th March is one of Make it Wild’s Natural Mindfulness Wellbeing Walks from 10.30am until midday.

  • 29th March - Launch of Northallerton's new Repair Cafe

  • Saturday 29 March is Make it Wild’s Seasonal Foraging in Yorkshire.
