Our nature walk at Ferryhill Carrs
Youngsters from Cleves Cross School were among the participants in our Indie News Week event
Taking time out to enjoy a lunchtime nature walk! Students from local school Cleves Cross rambled through the woodland and were able to identify different birdsong as well as get to see the varied locations in the 16 acre site.
The protected green space, maintained by Durham County Council, is known as a mix of fen (carrs), open water, ancient semi-natural woodland, grassland and scrub habitats. The reserve is a haven for a number of bird species including willow warbler, blackcap, lesser white-throat, and yellow hammer.
Regular readers may remember that this site was featured here at The Northern Eco back in February when it was discovered that developers had been visiting the area to identify potential site for 246 new houses.
Along with several community representatives, myself and the editor of the Ferryhill & Chilton Chapter, Archie Mackay the walk concluded at the open land where the development could potentially take place.
Indie News Week is hosted by The Public Interest News Foundation (PINF), the UK’s first charity to support public interest news – ethical and impartial journalism that informs and empowers the public about the things that matter to all of us.
