Introducing Pickled Radish Feasts
Pickled radish feasts? What on earth is a pickled radish feast? Questions for this Friday lunchtime….
Welcome! I’m Sarah Hartley and this is The Northern Eco bringing you the very first Foodie Friday. As you’ve received this newsletter then either you subscribed or someone forwarded it to you. If the latter, then you can click on this handy little button below.
We’ll get to the pickled radish feasts but first………
Those of you who’ve known me for a while might remember that I used to be a food writer. Back in the day when restaurant reviews appeared in printed form (and later as a food blogger @foodiesarah) I’d regularly publish views and news of the food scene in Manchester and further afield.
And I’ve missed doing that greatly. Aside from the buzz of seeing my byline on yellowing newsprint pinned up in steamy restaurant windows, food writing was a great way of connecting with people over such a fundamental topic.
So I’m bringing it back, but with what I intend will be a greener difference. Reviewing restaurants seems like something from the past and food blogging has gone the way of Tik Tok influencers. These shifts in habits are well described in the podcast below by the BBC’s Leyla Kazim.
Instead, what feels important in this time of microblogging and scattered distribution platforms is talking about sustainable food as well as value for money.
Which is why I’m delighted to announce a new collaboration with the amazing catering company Pickled Radish Feasts. From a base in North Yorkshire its founder Kimberley Brereton cooks up meals for supper clubs, retreats and events as well as offering workshops on everything from salads to fire cookery.
Once a month, starting on Friday, September 22, they’ll be sharing a recipe for The Northern Eco readers which is achievable at home. Being locally based you can trust they won’t include ingredients no-one has ever heard of or can’t find in your average shop. They’ll be focussing on vegetarian or vegan offerings to help us with that more sustainable way to eat.
I look forward to sharing that later this month so please help spread the word with the cooks in your life.
While I’m here……
If you'd like to sample Pickled Radish Feasts without having to cook it yourself, they will be serving Moroccan food at a Supper Club on Tuesday, September 26 at Two Dales Bakery, in Reeth, North Yorkshire.
The Kitchen Cabinet with Jay Rayner is being broadcast tomorrow (Saturday) from Masham, North Yorkshire. The culinary panel show answers audience questions. Listen here.
